Thaipongal is a festival celebrated by Hindus to give thanks to the Sun God for a successful harvest. It is a happy time with lots of age old traditions being followed. The children at all our centres had great fun joining in to decorate the premises. They made the ‘Kolam’ patterns on the floor from coloured grains of rice, and helped to boil the special ‘Pongal Rice’ – the first rice of the season. Some children wore traditional clothes for the festival too. As well as having a time of fun, this activity helped kids from other non-Hindu communities to understand and experience first-hand a tradition of another culture
